What is your super power?
What is the first thing that pops into your head when you read "self-awareness"?
For many, their mind goes to weaknesses and areas where improvement is needed.
That is obviously part of the self-awareness journey. But I think it is best to start at the other end of the spectrum.
What is your "super power"?
Or in other words, when you think of the #1 skill/attribute that helps you be successful, what is that one thing.
We are all made up of a 'stack' of skills and attributes but we usually have one that sticks out above the others.
What sticks out for you?
Shadow
Now think about when that superpower gets overplayed - what is the shadow?
How does your superpower turn into a constraint or cause you problems?
It is called the golden shadow.
We all have gold (strengths) and a corresponding shadow (weakness or constraint).
Exercise
Sit down and write for 10 minutes (either type it out or old school handwriting works) and answer "What is your super power and the shadow to that super power?"
Fleshing it out in writing is a really powerful exercise. It helps you think more clearly. Don't just think about your answer...spend ten minutes writing about it. It will help you gain clarity on what your super power and shadow is and the best way to articulate it.
This exercise hits on two key principles:
1) Self- awareness is more important to a leader than anything else.
2) Writing is the best tool to clarify thinking.
