Distracted and Anxious
8 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Two words caught my attention as I read this text for the 100th-ish time:
Distracted (v. 40)
Anxious (v. 41)
It is almost like Jesus knew what would keep us from spending time with him in 2026.
No phones. No video games. No TV. No computers.
And yet distraction and anxiety kept Martha from choosing the good portion.
Or...maybe Martha was distracted and anxious because she didn't choose the good portion. Maybe if she had chosen it, she would have experienced focus and peace.
Chicken or egg?
I am not sure it matters. We have a choice to make. The good portion or distracted and anxious.
David said in Psalm 27, One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire[c] in his temple.
There is "One thing" better than all things- Jesus.
The good portion is Jesus.
We are created to...spend time with him, abide in him, worship him, minister to him, etc.
