Long term success requires this...
“Courage is the only virtue you cannot fake.” — Nassim Taleb
I’ve always been curious about leadership.
For the first 10–15 years of my journey, I bought into the idea that, “All great leaders are ________.”
You can fill in the blank with “great communicators,” “great delegators,” or “highly organized.”
But over time, I’ve realized there’s nothing you can put in that blank that is truly universal. I know strong leaders who aren’t great communicators. I know great leaders who aren’t naturally organized.
Still, I’m starting to believe the leaders who sustain success over time often have one thing in common.
Courage.
I work with a lot of college baseball coaches, and this time of year requires courage. Parent emails show up. A player who told you he was all-in jumps into the portal. Administration calls a meeting and shares feedback about your leadership.
When it’s happening to someone else, it’s easy to say, “Ignore the noise.”
When it’s happening to you, when people are questioning your decisions, your leadership, even your character, it hits different.
It can sting.
Leadership takes courage to keep showing up.
Courage to take the body blows.
Courage to stay steady when you can’t defend yourself.
Courage to get up off the mat…again and again.
I don’t know many leaders who have sustained success for a long time who haven’t had to display courage repeatedly.
If you’re in a tough stretch right now, hang in there. Courage grows. The more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. Keep getting up.
P.S. It also takes courage and humility to ask, “Is there anything true here? Is there something I need to learn?” Sit with that honestly, make any needed adjustments, and then… get back off the mat.
