Once we understand this...

There is so much power and freedom in understanding and coming to grips with what we can control and what we can only influence.

We often think we can control more than we actually can.

When kids are small, we can control them. As they get older, we lose a certain level of control.

If we are not aware of our need to switch from primarily controlling to primarily influencing, we make things hard on everyone. We are always frustrated, and our kids slowly come to resent us.

As leaders, we can truly control very little. We can control our attitude, effort, and how we treat people. We can control when our staff meeting is and the agenda.

There are some other things we can control, but the list is really short. Trying to control that which we can only influence will not go well.

If we understand what exactly we can control then we can turn our attention to influencing those we lead.

Make a list of all the things we can control. Then do some thinking on what you need to do to win influence.

**The paradox of control says the more we try to attain or keep it, the less of it we actually have!
