How expanding your tool belt will improve your coaching and leadership

The best leaders have multiple tools in their tool belt.

They are able to solve problems by using multiple perspectives and 'world views'.

Let me explain.

Average coaches use one tool and see everything from this perspective.

If an athlete is underperforming the coach will use this one tool to solve every problem.

This one tool could be:
+ Mechanics (use your legs more on your jumper)
+ X & O's (we have to have better spacing to get a good shot off in rhythm)
+ Toughness (at some point you just have to knock that jumper down!)
+ Mental performance (what thoughts were in your mind as you caught the ball and prepared to shoot?)

The best leaders avoid a narrow focus on one 'world view' or tool.

They look at a problem, figure out which tool is needed, survey the tools at their disposal, and coach or teach using the necessary tool.

Average leaders are defined by the old adage "If all you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail."

We all have our strengths. We need to enhance and leverage those strengths but also grow our tool belt. Not at the expense of our best tool, but in addition to this tool.

PS. Having only one tool also hinders parents, business leaders, ADs, etc.
