The curator…

In 2018 I was introduced to an idea by a leadership group in Kansas.

That idea is that we all give off 'energy'.

I then read a book titled Energy Leadership that they recommended to me. The book put language to what I have intuitively known and felt.

In the book, author Bruce Schneider lays out 7 levels of energy. The book was great but I felt it created some unnecessary complexity.

So I took Bruce's principles and put them into a framework that I thought was simpler to understand and would help those I work with. Bruce had some great stuff...specifically, I loved the articulation of the two types of energy, catabolic and anabolic. Catabolic drains and anabolic fills.

There are behaviors that create these two types of energies.

So, in essence our micro behaviors are either filling the room or draining the room. This has become a staple of what I do with leaders.

A leader who drains the room is working against him/herself. It is hard enough to 'win' in leadership, so why would you make things even tougher on yourself?

For instance, if a coach shows up every day and displays catabolic behaviors and drains every room he is in, he is making a really hard situation impossible. The hard situation is trying to win games in the competitive landscape of college athletics.

What I did with this energy leadership concept is an example of being a script curator.

Two weeks ago I wrote about three leadership categories we all fit in: script reader, script writer, and script curator (Read HERE)

The author of Energy Leadership did not 'invent' energy and come up with the language of catabolic and anabolic. He curated for his book. Maybe call me a 2nd generation curator:)

I am not a script writer. I am a script curator.

I am a learner. And then over the years I have worked hard at taking the things I am reading and putting them into frameworks that resonate and help those I work with.

PS...and total side note: If you are a leader who is now analyzing your actions and behaviors...make sure to analyze tone. We know that the tone you take with others, although maybe not classified as a behavior, impacts the 'room'.
