The difference between high drama and low drama programs

Before I get to my email...

In my end-of-the-year review I talked about hiring someone to help with the video portion of my podcast and social media. I spoke with several really talented people and was blown away. Then when we talked finances, they were a little (okay...a lot) out of my price range. So...between Christmas and New Years, I dove into learning video editing and social media reach.

Low drama, high achieving!

Some athletic programs are low drama and high achieving while other programs are high drama and low achieving.

I have been thinking about and trying to get my mind wrapped around what leaders of low drama high achieving programs do differently than leaders of high drama low achieving programs.

There is a big difference between the two.

*Side note: There will always be some level of drama, turbulence and issues because people are involved. However, I have noticed some coaches have significantly less drama than others.

What do low-drama, high-achieving leaders do?

+ Low-drama leaders create a trusting environment. High drama programs are often characterized by having a lot of rules that convey a lack of trust.

+ They balance sales with truth in the recruiting process. "We think you will be a great fit with us...but it will be the hardest thing you have done to date...this program is not for everyone so make sure you are up to the challenge." As Arizona State football coach Kenny Willingham said during an interview "Recruit to the challenge, not the reward."

+ They are not afraid of confronting people who don't meet standards and expectations.

+ They swiftly and without drama or high emotion hold people accountable to the standard.

+ They are not afraid to move on from someone who has proven they can't or won't buy in.

+ The leader and his/her staff operate out of anabolic energy.

+ They are humble.

+ They inspire.

+ They are good at high challenge and high support.

+ They are consistent themselves.

The programs that are low drama are often the programs that also achieve at a high-level. There are some high drama programs that can achieve but those are very few and far between.

The best programs I observe are almost all low, low drama...and have high-levels of success.

What do you need to do to lead your program to a healthy, low-drama program?
