Nothing great happens overnight

"Behind every great achievement lies a long, unseen journey." Shane Parish

Great doesn't have to be a start-up company that changes the world (Ex: Apple).

It doesn't have to be an athlete who makes it to the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc, and takes his team to a championship.

It can be being a great mom or dad. It can be climbing the ladder in your 50-person company to a senior executive. It can be a high school coach who gets his/her athletes to play above their talent.

"Great achievement" is relative. The point of this quote for me is the "long, unseen journey" that is required for "great achievement."

My experience is most people will not do the mundane, un-sexy, common work for a long period of time.

We will diet for two weeks but not put in the long term work to actually change how we eat and form new habits.

We will start the process of growing in an area of weakness but stop once change becomes really tough.

We will start to learn something new but will bail once the excitement is gone.

Name someone who has achieved something "great" and I will show you someone who did the mundane, unsexy, common things for a long freakin time.

The equation is mundane + unsexy + common + time = uncommon.

The thing about being uncommon is it's often not a unique gift or some special quality but rather something ordinary done over an inordinate amount of time.

We get distracted. We start to chase another shiny object. We move on to something else.

The willingness to do the long journey is often what sets those who achieve great things from those who live in the land of mediocre.

What is one thing you are sick of doing but know deep down you know that if you continue it will pay big dividends in the future?
