Driving in the dark and the rain...

This past week I had an early morning, one-hour drive.

The moment I woke up, I knew it was going to be a crappy drive. Rain! Ugh.

If you have ever driven through Dallas, in the rain, you know it is not a pleasant experience.

This was going to suck, and here is why.

1) I can navigate my way through Dallas but I do not 'know the roads'...meaning, I am not familiar with the roads like I am around where I live. On top of that, like most metro areas, there is always road construction. So navigating new roads plus lane closures and construction is difficult.

2) It was dark. I am guessing this probably puts me in the 'old man' category but it is becoming harder and harder for me to drive in the dark because...

3) My eyes are not great. I need to get glasses...soon.

4) The obvious reason that makes this drive difficult is the rain. It is not just the rain, but the windshield wipers, the cars driving by 'kicking up' the rain onto your car, the puddles that can cause your car to hydroplane, etc.

All of what I just said about my drive is also why following a leader who lacks clarity is not fun. A leader who lacks clarity is unable to execute on his/her most important responsibility...

+ The leader is supposed to help you navigate the 'roads'.

+ They are supposed to shine a light on your path so that you are not walking in the dark.

+ They are supposed to give sight to where you/we are going.

+ And lastly, they are supposed to wipe away the things that prevent you from seeing clearly.

If you are a leader, whether it is of 3 people or 30,000, it is critical that you know where you are going, how you are going to get there, and be able to clearly communicate that to the people you lead.

Are you bringing clarity to your people? If not, in what areas are they walking in the dark?
