Why guess when you can know
I have been thinking about two things for the last several weeks.
1) How the stories we tell ourselves determine our future. As Jim Loehr said, “Your inner voice pretty much determines your destiny.”
2) With a new school year upon us, there are probably people around us who are lost, feeling overwhelmed, and unsure if they belong (this is the story they are telling themselves).
So with those two things on my mind, I wanted to throw out this encouragement.
Story
Instead of wondering about the story your athletes or staff tell themselves, why not ask?
"Quick question...out of curiosity...It is said that we are all telling ourselves a story, can I ask what the story you are currently telling yourself is?"
Be ready to tell your story first if they are not sure exactly what you are getting at.
Overwhelmed
Instead of wondering if someone around you is overwhelmed, lost, and unsure if they belong, ask them.
"This is the time where I think we can all get a little overwhelmed so I wanted to check in on you...how are you doing?"
Don't worry about these questions being met with confusion or defensiveness. Just ask. In my experience, when we have the courage and care to ask, eventually the person gets to a point where they will share what is really going on.
Again, why ask when you can know!
