What the last 3 months have taught me about decision making

I have heard this statement 6 times over the last 3ish months.

"I'm intrigued I'm just not sure if I should take this job or not."

My immediate question is..."If a gun was to your head and you had to give the answer that is deep in the crevices of your heart, what is your heart saying to do?"

And every time, the people I am talking to know the answer.

I will not say 100%, but a really high percentage of the time we know whether we should or shouldn't take the job.

I am becoming more and more aware that our problem is not that we don't know what we should do, but that we hate the thought of executing our decision.

If we know we should take the job...we have to execute the following:

-Have that conversation with your AD/President

-Have that conversation with your staff

-Have that conversation with your student-athletes

-Have that conversation with your kids/family

-Have that conversation with the recruits

-Leave the school/neighborhood that you love

-Deal with the doubt/regret of leaving a good situation

-Deal with the doubt of the new job.

If you know you should not take the job, we have to execute on the following:

-Have that conversation with the AD/President of offering school

-Have that conversation with your staff (who is excited to go...or excited for you to go:)

-Having that doubt of turning down maybe a career-changing opportunity

-The 'what-ifs' of staying at your current job

....you get the idea.

So we come up with multiple reasons not to make the decision. We stall because we just "can't decide." We stall by trying to secure more from our potential job offer. We stall by talking to just a few more people.

And all the while, deep down in our hearts, we know it is or isn't the right job for us.

Again, you might start off as somewhat unsure, but usually, within the first 24 hours, we know what we should do.

This decision heuristic is not foolproof, but it is a really good exercise to help delineate between what is legitimately not knowing what to do and fear of executing.
