My billboard would say...

If I had a billboard that communicated my deepest desires and hopes for the people I work with and people I will be working with in the future it would be an equation:

Self-awareness + Growth = Your Best

Self-Awareness

The self-awareness journey is life long journey. But by getting around the right people and having the right conversations, you can make big strides in this area.

That is exactly what happened to me when I was on staff at Stonegate Church. To begin with, we had these conversations frequently. We took time to evaluate and grow in self-awareness.

Two- in ministry you are not leading with a paycheck. You have to lead wiht influence and by creating trust. In most industries when you ask someone 'under' you, there is ALWAYS this reality that essentially states "I am asking you to do this and if you don't do it at a high level, it won't go well for you."

In much of minsitry, you are leading people who have a full time job, kids to raise, and other responsibilities.

They DON'T WORK FOR YOU.

So you don't have a paycheck to hold over their head.

I share this because if you are not self-aware of how people experience you...and they experience you in a weird or unhealthy way, it is virtually impossible to lead them.

So in ministry, my self-awareness journey was sped up.

Growth

The next part of this equation is growth. It is one thing to recognize where you have constraints or where you can come across as abrasive or moody, it is altogether another thing to change and grow out of those things.

In my conversation with Justin Su'a on my podcast several weeks ago, he said something really wise and profound "Follow the problems".

When we see struggles or problems in an area, investigate them. It probably means you have some room to grow.

For example, If you consistently have people asking you clarifying questions after a meeting or presentation, you might not be communicating with the type of clarity that is needed.

Once you identify an area where growth is needed, come up with a plan and attack the growth process.

Change is difficult. Change is even more difficult when you have had success.

I love the stories of Nick Saban. Saban was changing his offense the year after winning a national championship. He evolved. It is exactly what we need to do.

If you are consistently following the problems and then working hard to grow you will consistently be your best.

This equation is massively important.

Why you may ask?

As John Maxwell said, "Everything rises and falls with leadership."

If there is a problem in your organization or program, it is a leadership problem.

If the leader is constantly getting better and raising their leadership capacity, the organization or program will rise along with the leader's capacity.
