Great exercise to see your program/organization with new eyes

Exercise for leaders: New Eyes Exercise

If you have been in your current role for more than one this might be an exercise for you!

Pretend you leave your job. And in your place, they hire an elite leader. Ask yourself what changes this elite leader would make in the program you just left.

What would they stop doing, start doing, or tweak? What area would they immediately address?

Two things can happen after being in a role for a period of time.

1) We can get numb or accustomed to what is going on. It is like asking a fish about the water. If fish could talk...they would most likely look at you crazy and wonder "Water? What does that even mean?" They are so used to water...it is literally all they know.

So, you may have a tough time managing a team member. We will often become so accustomed to this person's attitude, demeanor, work ethic, etc... that we lose sight that this person is disruptive and something needs to be done as soon as possible.

2) If things were in a rough spot when you took over, we can often downplay what the issues currently are. "You should have seen this place when we took over?" Because things are better, we can often lose sight of the importance of taking things from good to great. We have taken things from terrible to good and then we stop working hard to keep improving.

As Kat Cole, CEO of Athletic Greens, says "When we come into a new job, we see nothing but all the things that we can improve right away. But when we are in a job for a while, we get blinded by our progress."

You are getting replaced by an elite leader, what one thing does he/she do immediately after taking over for you?
