We say it is important, but is it?

I've been thinking about an idea lately...and it started with the following thought.

Most coaches, when asked about the mental side of their sport, would say it is extremely important. Yogi Berra famously said baseball is 90% mental. Coach after coach says things like "He/she is just not tough enough." Sometimes this is about the physical aspect...but mostly it is about the mental side of sport.

However, many coaches don't spend much time talking about or working on the mental aspect.

And if I had to bet, you have things in your life that you would say are incredibly important and yet you devote minimal time to said things (I know I am guilty of this).

The goal of this email is to encourage you and challenge you to take inventory of your priorities and time.

"It’s not that we don’t have time. It’s that we don’t have time for the things that are really important. There’s always enough time to do what’s really important, but we get caught up doing things that aren’t important."  Larry Winget

You don't need more time; you need more focus." Shane Parish

“Few things are as important to your quality of life as your choices about how to spend the precious resource of your free time.”  Winifred Gallagher

"There are basically two groups of humans. Group 1 lives idly, consuming entertainment, passing time. And then Group 2, living with a constant, relentless thread of curiosity. Learning, consuming, hoarding ideas. I'm pretty sure we know what group we're in." Zach Pogrob

"A lack of routine causes more problems than poor choices. Routines turn desired behavior into default behavior." Shane Parish

Three Questions and a Challenge

1. What do you say is important but don't make time for?

2. What do you do that is unimportant but you readily make time for?

3. What mindless, time-wasting habits do you need to stop?

Decide in June to make time for the things that are most important and at the same time, cut out the unimportant things. 30 days of intentionality can make a huge difference (and hopefully create habits that last past June!).

I end with this quote to bring some sobriety to our time management, daily habits, and routines...

"How we spend our days, is of course, how we spend our lives." Annie Dillard
